Adding Send To the Recycle Bin

Add a SHORTCUT TO THE RECYCLE BIN in your SEND TO folder.

That way you can just right click on a file you want to delete, and send it to the recycle bin without having to confirm each time.

CD-ROM

The maximum a floppy disk can contain is 1.44 MB. To play a game with around 200 MB you are stuck with 100 over diskettes. The CD-ROM is a revolutionary invention that allows up to 625 MB at one time. However, it is read only, which means you can’t store in anything.

Buttons Fun
Although most CD-ROMs comes with only 2 buttons, do you know you can also skip, play previous track and play the next track as well with a proper combination? Check properly on your instruction manual for additional functions. You just might be surprised what it can do.

Clean Thoroughly
It is important to clean the CR-ROM at least once every month. Get a CD lens cleaner. If possible, choose one with an alcohol solution drop. This should ensure that your CD-ROM will always be able to read properly.

Clean You CDs
It is just as important to clean your CDs often. Why? Because if you have a speck of dust on the surface of one of your CDs, once spinning at high-speed in the drive, the speck of dust is enough to produce scratches on your precious CD.

Running In DOS
One of the common problems with CD-ROMs is unable to access it under DOS. This might be because the protected-mode CD-ROM driver isn’t available. You’ll need to add the real-mode device driver, usually included with your CD-ROM drive, in CONFIG.SYS and load MSCDEX.EXE, which is available in the Windows\Command folder. You should also make sure both files are on your startup disk.

Run List
Like those cool expensive hi-fi systems, you can customize the run list of your Audio CD, only not with the CD-ROM itself. Use Windows’ CD player to customize the run list and you can have your CD running in any track order you like.

Read Ahead
The read ahead buffer is useful to speed up things. Go to Control Panel, System. Click on the Performance tab. Click on the File System… button. On the File System Properties, click on CD-ROM. Make sure you have the fullest cache. Even if you have a CD-ROM with less than Quad speed, just move ahead. You’ll be surprised to find your CD-ROM running faster.

Added Non-Expanded Explorer when Right Clicking ..

Adding a second Explorer to the menu that pops up when right clicking on any folder or the Start Button.
This is handy to be able to open Explorer non-expanded and also for being able to open a second Explorer (non-expanded) while already in Explorer.

Open My Computer
Choose View-Options-File Types
Select the File Folder file type
Click Edit
For ACTION, type EXPLORER2
For APPLICATION USED, type C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,/select,C:\
Click OK and close all windows
Run REGEDIT
Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Locate and expand DIRECTORY
Locate and expand SHELL
Locate and expand EXPLORER2
Select COMMAND
On the right window RIGHT CLICK on DEFAULT
Select MODIFY
Remove the space and %1 at the end of the line
Click OK and close REGEDIT
EXPLORER2 will show up and launch a non-expanded view of Explorer whenever you right-click on the START BUTTON or any folder, even if you are already in Explorer.

The whole procedure can be done in REGEDIT, but this may be safer for users not experienced with REGEDIT

Backup Outlook Express email

One of the most important things to create backup copies of, is your email messages. Here’s a short guide on how to do this if you use the Outlook Express mail client.

Copy the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{long sequence of numbers and letters}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

to a backup location (blank CD, Zip disk, backup HD, etc.).

To import the email back into OE:

1) Open Outlook Express
2) Click File – Import – Messages
3) Highlight Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and click Next
4) Choose Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and click OK
5) Browse to the location (folder) where you backed up your email and click OK.

That’s it. You’ve now imported all your old emails.

This is especially useful for clean installs of your operating system, or moving emails to a different machine.

AR RAM Disk

AR RAM Disk is a driver for Windows NT/2000/XP used to create an additional drive in your memory. This drive can be used for storing temporary files, this can increase your system speed.

Using the RAM Disk Setup the Windows TEMP Directory to the RAM Disk:

1. Create a Batch File with the following content:
set TEMP=T:
set TMP=T:

2.Put this Batch File into the Startup Folder of Windows.

Warning:

Use AR Soft RAM Disk at your own risk.
Using large amount of memory for the RAM Disk can cause problems with other drivers or programs.
Notes:
If you reboot your system all contents of the RAM Disk will be lost!
The theoretical maximum capacity of the RAM Disk is 2GB.
If driver fails to allocate the memory, the driver does not start. The driver writes an event record into the Event Log. Please look into the Event Viewer for more details of the error.
